Finance is a diverse discipline with many career opportunities.
At Ohio University, all finance majors take four foundational courses, ensuring a breadth of knowledge in the core areas of finance. The courses provide practical, applied training in financial markets and institutions, financial statement analysis, investments, and corporate finance. Then, we encourage you to select specialized curriculum tracks to prepare for your career in investments, corporate finance, or financial planning. As an OHIO finance student, you’ll have access to more than 30 College of Business student organizations, some which focus specifically on the needs of finance majors.
At graduation, you’ll leave Ohio University’s College of Business with sound theoretical knowledge of financial principles, highly developed problem-solving skills, and experience with industry standard analytical tools. As a graduate, you’ll be highly sought after in investment banking, commercial banking, corporate finance, financial planning, and insurance. Or, you can further your education and enter a variety of master’s programs.
Students that major in finance will graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree (BBA).
91% of our 2022 finance graduates experienced positive outcomes such as employment or continuing education within six months after commencement. Many students have even accepted offers during their senior year.
Our Business Academic Advising & Career Services is onsite in Copeland Hall, ready to help you understand how to use good career marketing strategies, starting your first year. In addition to career fairs and College Placement Champions, you’ll have access to BOBCAT CareerLink, a web-based system where employers post positions, review resumes, and connect with candidates. Plus, participate in workshops, seminars, and even one-on-one coaching to make sure you’re presenting yourself the right way and achieving your career goals.

The Finance Department is committed to bridging the gap between the classroom and the financial industry, and the Finance Professional Engagement Series is a principal conduit. Each year, dozens of finance professionals give guest lectures to classes, network with student organizations, provide professional coaching, and participate in signature events like the Finance Panel Speaker Summit and the Women in Finance Summit (new in 2023). These interactions expose students to the incredibly broad set of possibilities in the finance world, give students a window into the daily lives of financial professionals, and provide concrete steps to enter and thrive in a variety of fulfilling roles.
The Finance Department has five student organizations that give you hands-on experiences to set you apart from your peers. Students are recruited at the highest level for finance positions.
OHIO's Student Equity Management Group manages more than $4.4 million in Ohio University Foundation funds. The student-run group selects investments for their long only equity portfolio, consistently beating the S&P 500.
The Ohio University Student Fixed Income Management Group also manages more than $4 million in Ohio University Foundation funds. These funds are invested in fixed-income securities based on group members' research.
The Ohio University Derivatives Management Group manages a synthetic portfolio consisting options, futures, and swaps. These students use many unique strategies in order to fully capitalize on the expected movement of the underlying asset.
The Association of Women in Finance supports and encourages women who are interested in working in and/or learning about finance. New members are paired with an experienced mentor who has a background in finance, similar interests, and real world experience.
Members of the Financial Management Association develop professional and social skills outside the walls of the classroom. The benefits of membership include exposure to the financial industry, networking opportunities, and affiliation with an international chapter.
